A Good days racing with 13 skippers attending Peter Jackson took what turned out to be an easy win and the middle order fleet was close with some tough racing.

Very light East to Southeast winds. Largest rigs required. Some close racing amongst the leaders. Robin and Colin kept things going smartly and Ian refreshed us.  I had this breif report from Mike Ewart over the phone, John Burgoine was great, Mike came good towards the end, it was good to see David Wilkinson win a couple at the end. New boat was being designed between Keith "the Irish Destroyer" Bell and Peter Jackson in the car on the way home! Unfortunately Sandwell MBC are having difficulties with the local council that owns the water they use which meant we had to switch this event away from their venue, thanks to David Wilkinson and Cotswold MBC for stepping in.  The Bassett Lowke Trophy Attracted 11 skippers from far and wide to compete for the magnificent Glass etched trophy depicting a promotional poster used by the Bassett Lowke firm. Since the introduction of the trophy it has been won only by Abington Park MYC Skippers keen not to let it go outside their home club. 5 Frensham Footy Fanatics bought their boats to The Pond for the last scheduled Club Footy event of the year. A simple course was set at the Club House end of the pond with a start between the piers out to a turning mark and then down to two spreader marks opposite the club house. After the initial race with the light but steady breeze it was decide to shorten the course, the spreader marks were moved also the turning mark was moved to give more clearance between the Footy course and the big bully boat(s) course. A further 3 races were run, Graham had not got into his stride as he only got one 1st place along with a 3rd and a 2nd . In these races Frank’s boat seemed to have an affinity for the reeds by the club house, so the Footy gang commandeered the Rib and kept it at their end of the bank. Also the course was changed to ignore the spreader mark nearest the club house making the course a simple sausage shape. After a slow start, Steve, sailing his plywood Super Bug, started to get the best out of the boat and began to pick up a number of second places behind Graham who was now fully in command of the event. Jim still has work to do to get his sails into a competitive shape. Meanwhile Keith picked up a few 1st places and a steady number of 2nd ‘s but was constantly challenged by the rapidly improving Super Bug of Steve. 12 races were run giving two discards, the final placing and scores were; Graham Whitehead 11, Keith Parrott 23, Steve Hill 24, Frank Wood 32, Jim Phillips 50. Very warm humid day. Forecast winds from the south but on the water tended to come from all directions. When coming from the northwest I could smell the cattle on the far bank. Some skippers coped better than others and there was a large variation in sail area carried - larger probably better most of the time. Thanks go to Alan Skitt and H for officiating and Ian for tea and biccies.  Tuesday 9th saw our 3rd Club Footy event of the year. It was a disappointing start with only 3 boats on the water in the morning. 4 races were sailed in C rigs, after the first two races the course was significantly shortened as it was proving almost impossible to round the windward marks due to the wind shifts and eddies coming from around the Club House. Keith Parrott’s Footy experience and well sorted ICE was had a definite advantage over the boats of Steve Hill and Frank Wood.
After the lunch break 3 more Footy skippers came and joined in the fun, Now with Graham Whitehead on the water Keith was no longer dominant. Jim Phillips was sailing his newly completed ICE and Rory sailing an ex Roger Stollery ICE but with only a “Just in” rig and a D rig to choose from was either over or under powered and paid the price. Due to the differences in experience and boat performance it was decided that handicaps should be applied so the final positions, after 8 races were :- 1st Steve Hill, 2nd Frank Wood 3rd Keith Parrott, 4th Graham Whitehead, 5th Jim Phillips, 6th Rory. Steve Hill was presented with a set of 3 alcoholic miniatures and Frank a new set of Footy sails in the form of a pack of Tesco bin liners. Thanks were expressed to Pat Cushing for acting as Race officer and keeping the scores. The next and last Club Footy event for this year will be on Tuesday 20th September. |
