The Big Rig template should be placed on top of the hull-measuring box, with the hull in the box and of course the sail mounted in the hull.
The squares are then counted; those squares partially covered outside are counted as whole squares and have to be less than any whole squares inside the sail not covered. The template is moved laterally to give the best covering of squares. So it’s not correct to measure without the box, because there will be some loss of area from the deck to the boom, and as you can see in the pictures if the fin and mast are raked back, this complicates the issue. So your sail may require some adjustment to comply. The attached pictures show how we measure the first picture shows the general arrangement, and the second one shows partial squares outside the template and are counted as two whole squares. |
