A Successful Mid-summer Evening at Crawley Mariners Yacht Club
Once again we were invited by CMYC for a radio sailing evening on Hedgecourt Lake, close to East Grinstead. The lake is beautiful and is approached via a narrow track through the woods several hundred metres long, opening out at the clubhouse with a wide launching area with pontoons etc.

The weather was glorious with warm sunshine and a gentle breeze that was forecast from the East, an ideal direction blowing along the whole length of the lake towards the club. However when we were setting the Footy Internet Course (FIC) at about 6:30 PM the wind decided that it would blow from the West! Then later in the proceedings it went round to South before finally fading at about 9 PM.

Charles Smith and I were the only sailors to bring Footys, but there was a local member with a cruising ketch. Apart from a bit of practice sailing for members to get used to sailing radio boats, a total of 11 timed runs around the FIC was completed, which allowed friendly competition between local dinghy sailors, some of whom had raced before in previous years. Most successful of these was Keith Hiscock who beat his 2013 time by 2 minutes, which gained him 3rd place. However the winner was keen dinghy sailor Neil Thornhill in a time of 4 minutes 25 seconds. He also helped his young son Charlie to get 2nd place and win the junior prize from Daniel Senior who was 6th with a time of 9 minutes 57. The prizes kindly provided by Donal Roche were presented by the the Commodore.

Many thanks to Charles Smith and my daughter Linda for helping me as FIC timekeepers. The times acheived are now shown here on the Footy website, www.sailfootyuk.com.

Click the very right hand button, which says 'more' and the Internet Course window will appear.

Finally, many thanks to CMYC and Donal Roche in particular for his invitation, hospitality and assistance in getting the course set and recovered.
