The first round of the Extreme Footy Series was well attended with nine gentlemen of senior years coming together to play with their toy boats, nonetheless the competiton was keen, sailed in a great spirit despite the cold conditions. John Burgoine (350 ICE) mastered the Powells Pool chop and the olympic course the best with his ICE and new sails, apparently green isn't his favourite colour. Peter Shepherd (65, Fat Boy) was in fine form early on but with the changable conditions missed out too often on the wrong rig. (thats my excuse anyway) Local lads(?) Graham Tite (4, Slim) & Mark Unitt (13, Slimmer than a Slim Thing) had, what has become customary, their usual battle, it was very close until Mark changed rigs for the final double points race only to lose out, with Graham getting to grips with the Slim throughout the event & winning that race and Mark dropping two places behind the Abington Park duo of Peter Jackson (30, ICE) and Mike Ewart (36, Ice until he dropped it and then Depron Slim). The competition across the top six places was fierce throughout the day, like it or loathe it the final double point round, unique to the Extreme Footy, really does bring some jeapody into the proceedings.
Trevor Thomas (58, Ice) peaked way too early and had his highlight in race 4, and I think it is fair to say that Sid Sims (05, Fat Boy) and Geoff Raygada (41, Fat Boy) both struggled with boats that were not quite up to par they have gone away to lick their wounds, and get the scalpel and drill set out or in Geoffs case find the electrical Gremlins.
It was a most enjoyable days sailing, great company and thanks to Mrs Tite & Mark Unitt free lemon drizzle cake, well it just wouldn't be Birmingham without that!
The next Open Footy race is the Mad March Hare at Portishead Marine Lake, Bristol on Sunday 13th March 2016 and if you would like to join in the fun in the XFS series the next one is at Sandwell MBC's Dartmouth Park lake 2nd April 2016. See you there!
PLEASE NOTE MARK UNITTS BOAT (13) IS A NEW DESIGN CALLED "SLIMMER THAN A SLIM THING" LETS SEE HIM GET IT ON THE SIDE OF A HULL BEFORE I TRY TO FIT IT IN THE LITTLE BOX ON THE SCORE SHEET!
