Footy Gold Cup Report 2012

Day One

Wow what an event !
The scenery is fantastic, the sun has shone for the first day and wind god threw us a little bit of everything.

Sestriere lake is situated in the Italian alps at 2000 meters above sea level which makes this the highest sailing event that I have ever attended, the lake is basically a rectangle and the prevailing wind is usually from the east which means blowing along the length of the lake.

Video Courtesy of Animor Dobrovich (SWE)
All essential facilities are within a short walk including, toilets, food, a choice of hotel, bar, rain cover (should you need it!).

As for the racing, the Saturday dawn with some drizzle and the wind from the west, this direction results in a wind shadow at one end of the length but a firm breeze at the other end, the course makes good use of the length of the lake meaning rig choice was looking for a balance between the light patches for 70% of the course and 6-10mph at the leeward end. Most of the 22 skippers chose their biggest rigs for the first 3 races then as the wind swung through 180 degrees and came from the east with a much cleaner wind and grew to a stable peak of approx 18mph during the afternoon all rigs were reduced to 3rd rigs for most skippers.

The racing was close all down the fleet all day with all the skippers enjoying the challenging shifts in the morning, at Lunch time after we had completed 8 races, 5 skippers had started to form a lead group with Rob Vice (GBR) lead the way with CJ Vice (GBR) in second and Phil Tyler (SUI) each winning at least one race and posting reliable results in all races.

By the end of the day we had completed a further 18 races.

Day Two

Most of the fleet attended the footy gala dinner on the Saturday night where the generous donation of goodies from our sponsors Oracover, Bondic, Hitec and Multiplex were raffled to several lucky winners including Scott Wallis winning a complete set of the latest 2.4ghz radio gear on the same day that his usual set went for bath in the lake !  Much was discussed over several glasses of local red wine, fine Italian pasta and the first day was drawn to a very merry close.

The second day started with more glorious sunshine and a light breeze from the North East, any wind with any north in it has to come over the top of the Alps before it get to the lake so we had plenty of shifts to learn.

The racing started with everyone in their biggest rigs and as the wind grew in strength some of us changed down to retain boat control and avoid too much drag from submarining yachts.

Claudio Vagada’s  own design with an immaculate shroud less conventional rig held a fine sail shape under increasing wind strength and gave him two early victories. Scott Wallis’ Ranger with a cured leak and dried our transmitter was now more reliably in the lead group along with Phil Tyler’s own design and another fantastically prepared sail using a Mac rig concept and the pair of Vice ICEs sporting the well tried and tested Stollery swing rig.

There were many other people sharing good race results with a wide range of hull shapes and boat weight having their time in the spot light.

Again the race committee were doing a great job of getting in lots of races, the format of 3 races on the trot before a 10 minute “technical” break for batteries, trimming, repairs etc and a generous hour for lunch meant that we could enjoy the sociable aspect of international yacht races where we reaffirm old friendships and make new acquaintances where discussions was so often on boat design, technical evolution, or last night’s red wine.

The racing was even closer today than yesterday and most races saw the lead change on the last beat with the race committee being kept on their toes to note all the close finishes throughout the fleet. Rob Vice continued to score consistently well and the win was no longer in debate but close battles for the honour of the prizes were keeping everyone performing as best they could.

There were prizes and goody bags for all competitors and a fine collection of trophies including the “Copa Italia” for the nation with the best 3 skippers won by the UK with Rob Vice, CJ Vice and Scott Wallis.

I would like to restate my thanks to the race committee for giving up their  time this weekend and all the organising team’s effort over the last year without their effort there would not have been a race for us all to enjoy.
