Midland Footy League - March 2014 Results
report by Peter Shepherd

The first round of the Midland Footy League started with a foggy morning, consequently the winds were light and nearly all the skippers were fitting their 2014 season boats with the largest sails in their bags. The seven skippers came from four clubs across the country, David Wilkinson (Iambus2, 46) having the longest journey from Costwold MYC.
It was evident that much work had been done over the winter break, the skipper who had put this work to best effect appears to be Mike Ewart (1299, 36) who with his excellent sailing skills combined with a Peter Henderson standard 1299 hull albeit with some additional weight on the keel and a set of Scott Wallis McRigs (details available here) found the winning combination.
Slightly miffed to have been relugated to second place was Peter Shepherd (SliM, 65), all seemed to be going well up until race 10, when it all just seemed to fall apart thankfully I was able to finish the day with a couple more decent results, although I am still scratching my head as to what went wrong.
David Wilkinson (Iambus2, 46)  put together five race wins and was always in the thick of it, a series of poorer results just before lunch meant he struggled to overhaul the points totals of the slightly more consistant skippers ahead.
The first of the Dead Tree Trophy contestants was Peter Jackson (Red Box, 30) with his beautifully made balsa Ice derivative consistently sailing in with second, thirds and fourths on his card peter was slightly surprised he had only finished fourth his three higher discards and the inability to put together a couple of wins costing him. Paul Risdale (Wice, 53) also a Dead Tree Trophy contestant had a couple of good results finishing with a couple of race wins, however he was to inconsistant with his other results to really challenge for the top honours, it is fair to say that the Footy is far from Paul's favourite boat to sail.
Sid Simms (1299, 05) and Geoff Raygarda (Half Pint2, 26) had their own private battle, despite some excellent starts Sid was unable to capitalise, I remember more than one epic downwind leg  battle with him during the day, he never managed to break into the top three, and Geoff's performance was creditable as this was his first Footy event and he was somewhat hampered by an under performing sail set.
The day was a good test of skipper skill and fittingly the skipper with the most experiance and the best understanding of his sails took the win on this opening event in the race series.
