Videlo Globe Trophy 2013
Pheonix Marine Model Club

report by Peter Shepherd

It has been a slow start to the begining of the Footy Season with the unseasonably cold weather keeping many of the usual skippers away from events, consequently only six stalwarts of Footy Racing turned out for the Videlo Globe Trophy.  This meant that although the fleet was diminished the skill of the assembled skippers was high.

The morning session belonged to Hugh McAdoo with five wins out of eight, however he didn't have it all his own way and was continually harried to the line often by Roger Stollery and occasionally by Peter Jackson & David Wilkinson. In the light winds the "Just'in" rig was very much in evidence with all but one of the Ice sporting this rig. Peter Shepherd didn't get off to a very auspicious start with electrical problems in the first race and then missing races two & three trying to sort them, he also struggled in the next three races until a stripped sail servo cog was diagnosed.
Unusually the races were started on a downwind leg, which gave rise to some interesting situations and rights of way calls upon rounding the first mark. Race eight, the final race before lunch, was squeezed in by shortening the course which suited the skippers from Abington Park Model Yacht Club, Jackson & Shepherd, who stormed away from the start and didn't relinquish their lead despite the Guildford duo of Stollery & McAdoo, being hot on their pintals.

After the break, with a couple of of course changes to accommodate the strengthening but shifting wind, the tables were turned at the top with Roger Stollery taking six of the eight from Hugh McAdoo this being enough to secure victory. Further back Peter Jackson sailed himself into 3rd place with some consistent results in the afternoon. Peter Shepherd's results improved greatly after he was kindly loaned a "Just'in" rig by Charles Smith, however even this wasn't enough to overhaul David Wilkinson and his Iambus2 who consolidated his forth position. Peter was so impressed with the borrowed rig it had to be wrenched from his hands at the end of the event.

Charles Smith gave up his sail in order to officiate, which he did in his own inimitable style, and for which all the skippers were most grateful. All the skippers who attended would like to express their gratitude to Pheonix Marine Model Boat club for providing the facility and the manpower to enable the Footyists to keep alive one of the traditional events on the Footy calender. The Pheonix Marine Model Club also provided an additional skipper "Theo Nicks" as Roger had provided an additional Ice and they handed around the transmitter between their members throughout the day.

Whilst the racing was fierce and competitive, as always with Footy racing the atmosphere between competitors was accommodating so that we assembled together to race as friends and we all went home as friends after the event.
In due course the Videlo Globe Trophy was awarded to Roger Stollery and prizes handed out to first, second and third from Charles Smith's vast cellar. Roger then surprised Peter Shepherd by carrying out the Guildford Model Yacht Club tradition of  awarding a prize to the last placed skipper, the prize on this occasion being Roger's very own 117 "Just'in" Rig. I consider I got the best prize of the day which goes to prove that sometimes it pays just to attend and be one of the also rans.
