Fourteen skippers came together to contest the 2013 Footy Championship, with three Junior skippers amongst their number, Clive Bardell and his team at Watermead Model Boat Club had everything ready and in good order and their efficient running of the event contributed to all the Footy skippers having a most enjoyable day.
The course was set to an upwind, down wind  course which after a couple of races was lengthened slightly, the steady winds gave rise to some close racing with a number of close battles taking place throughout the field, Rob Vice (Ice) once again showed the field how it is done, retaining his title from last year, however he was constantly harried and chased to the line by any number of the rest of the fleet where the battle for second was so intense that three skippers all ended up on 41 points.

CJ Vice, (Ice) the Junior Champion aged 13, was justly awarded the 2nd  position in the main championship for his exceptional perfomance having taken one more win than Roger Stollery (Supabug) & Hugh McAdoo (Ice) 3rd and 4th respectively, these two had to be seperated by counting back to 5th place wins! It doesn't come any closer than that!
Peter Shepherd secured 5th with a consistant display of sailing always in the hunt but only once managing to make it over the line ahead of this quality field, David Wilkinson (Iambus II) followed closely on Peter's pintals  in 6th place. With an epic battle for 7th going down to the wire, a much celebrated win for Peter Jackson (Ice) in race 15  just allowing him to pinch the position from Graham Tite (1299).
Once again 9th place was a close call with another great battle between of the class founding fathers Trevor Thomas (Awk) & Gray Sanderson (Duck III) being joined by Keith Parrot (Ice) of Frensham, Trevor won through by two points and 10th & 11th had to be decided on a count back Gary Sanderson, (DuckIII) just losing out to Keith Parrot (Ice).
Two of the junior skippers Gabriel & Lockie Vice were joined in the fight not to be last by first timer at this level Sid Sims the two juniors winning through in the end.

With close racing throughout the day, and the fleet racing together in almost all the races the inevitable clashes occured however these were treated generally with friendly exchanges of opinion and the guilty party completing his penalties as required, the consensus at the end of the event was that the standard of sailing and the competitiveness of the skippers within the Footy class is generally improved. Whilst they may not be to everyone's taste they are certainly within most peoples grasp financialy and when the racing is this close, the Footy are tough to beat for excitement and pure fun factor.
