Midland Footy League - October 2013
report by Peter Shepherd

The weather forecast was very poor for today's event with strong gusty winds and downpours predicted, thankfully the weather stayed away, unfortunately so did the skippers with initially only four turning up. The regular skippers who did turn out can only be described as stalwarts, Rob Yates of the local Anglia Marine Model Club came for some advice on a Footy he has under production only to find he was offered a sail of Paul Risdales Puma305. Considering the exalted company he was sailing with he handled the situation very well, having the good grace to accept being given position on the water a number of times, however he also managed to complete a couple of races just behind the rest of us, and on one memorable occasion came in fourth.

Down to business at the sharp end, Peter Jackson by his own admission had spent most of the previous evening swishing sails, it was time well spent as he was sailing his Red Box, a balsa ICE derivative, extremely well. Peter Shepherd tried every trick in his locker to try to keep him at bay using as many sailing tactics as he could muster however it was to no avail and by the time race 12 came around Peter Shepherd was left needing to win all the last four races to take the victory, a tall order indeed. When the two Peters got too engrossed in their battle for supremacy, Paul Risdale popped up to pinch the win with his Wice and keep them on their toes once more.
More experimentation from Mike Ewart sailing a couple of recently acquired 1299's from Peter Henderson, the camouflage "Just'in" sail helping him sneak around the back and take a couple of second places early on, I am sure as Mike gets more experience with sailing the Footy he will another very handy addition to the class racing scene.

The final placings were 1st Peter Jackson (30) Red Box, 2nd Peter Shepherd (65) ICE, 3rd Paul Risdale (53) Wice, 4th Mike Ewart (36) 1299 and 5th Rob Yates (153) Puma 305.

As has come to be the norm the racing was carried out in a competitive but friendly atmosphere with all skippers going away from the event happy with the days racing, many thanks to Paul Risdale for providing the Gazebo, which by the end of the day was giving shelter from the sun and not the rain as it was intended!
