Midland Footy League - May 2013

The May 2013 edition of the Midland Footy League was attended by seven footy veterans, joining them in his first Model Yachting adventure was Junior Andrew Sturt. The promised strong winds didn't really materialise with just a couple of races after lunch where the wind picked up, consequently most skippers started the day on their big rigs, it was definitely a day for surviving the gusts.

The course was set with an upwind leg through a narrow gate then downwind, starboard around  the leeward buoy, a wide broad reach, back to the gate once more around the leeward buoy and home. The early races were dominated by Peter Shepherd, sailing his Ice with a Justin rig he took six of the races before lunch meaning it would take an exceptional performance to overhaul his lead. Peter Jackson rose to the challenge improving his performance in the later half of the day. Ultimately the lead Peter Shepherd had built up was just to much.

Birmingham Model Yacht Club had three skippers in attendance Graham Tite proving to be the best of them with a solid third place with his 1299 "Quackers" and excellent "posh" sails.
The next three skippers had a monumental battle for 4th, 5th & 6th Paul Risdale (Wice) just coming out on top from John Meredith (Half pint) and Sid Sims. Sid was using Roger Stollery's "117 Justin" sail, loaned to him by Peter Shepherd and was mightily impressed with the additional performance this gave him. In the end it wasn't quite enough and he missed out on fourth place by just six points. Late starting Ice skipper Nigel Rudd had a couple of moments in the spotlight but ultimately the fleet always seemed to find some wind from somewhere to close the gap he had created.

Newest and by a long way youngest skipper, junior Andrew Stuart sailed very well,  it was his first ever event and he was somewhat hampered by only having one smallish sail to use, even so he showed plenty of promise with the general opinion of the other skippers assembled that he will be one to watch in the future.
Andrew took on his father Richard in a mini ICE challenge at lunchtime both sailing loaned boats in a mini race, Andrew just beating Dad by a few boat lengths.

Thanks to all that took part for a most enjoyable time, we look forward to seeing you all again soon.
