South Midlands Footy League - March 2012

Report from Peter Jackson

The first footy event of 2012 at Wicksteed Park was a little fraught, in that just prior to the event the lake was drained and the of the bottom. The main lake behind had also been drained for ride inspection purposes and the only way to fill it was from three land drains. Well there has not been much rain lately and the refilling was taken far longer than previous draining. In fact Peter Shepherd had been keeping a close watch on the filling level. He determined that it was filling about one inch per day, and there were numerous places that were not exactly level. So your scribe set a course to avoid the high spots and this led to a tricky slight cross wind leg close to the bank, where the wind seemed to have stopped blowing.

We had seven entrants for the event from Wicksteed and Birmingham clubs. We were able to easily get sixteen races with three discards before two thirty in the afternoon. Trevor Thomas carried on to win the first event much like he had done throughout last year. However there does appear to be a contender in the name of Graham Tite, who may give Trevor a run for his money this year. John Meredith was also showing signs of improvement on last year’s performance. Trevor was mainly sailing a plastic card Awk and Graham a Henderson 1299 with a unarig sail. John had purchased from America a ‘Half Pint two’, which was going well. Paul Risdale had also constructed a new boat from foam sheet, which looked very light. We look forward to the next Footy League event on April 14th briefing at 9.30 AM sharp.
