Midland Footy League - June 2013

They came from near and far, the entrants in this months MFL. We were blessed from visiting skippers from all around the region for the June edition of the MFL, swelling the ranks of the regular skippers at Abington Park and most welcome they were to. Peter Shepherd set an upwind downwind course with a wing buoy hidden away in a tricky wind corner of the pond, despite the course really only being a sausage & a triangle some of the skippers still managed to lose their way early on.

The wind was once again variable, with the conditions suiting larger sails, mainly A rigs and Justins by the end of the day. Once again Peter Shepherds' progress was imperious towards this years title, winning seven of the sixteen races and coming second in six more his only mishap happened in race three when his boat was accidentally de-masted. Peter Jackson did his best to keep him honest but by race 15 all Peter S had to do was follow PJ home, Peter Jackson was sailing his new Red Box which is very competitive as can be seen from the Scorecard it was actually very close at the top, with only two points in it by the end.
David Wilkinson (Iambus2) was the only other skipper to taste victory, with two wins to his name late on in the morning, Paul Risdale (Wice) took a little advice on sail set up from the two Peters and improved his performances late on leaving him just behind David Wilkinson by two points. Sid Sims(1299) was trying out his new Soft Sail Swing Rigs and his performance continue to steadily improve often racing up with the leaders, his problem now being that the standard has got so good that you can't afford to make even half a mistake.
It was good to see Trevor Thomas, and most pleasurable to sail with him once more, every time I turned around Trevor seemed to have a different sail on his Awk.
Just arriving in time was Nigel Rudd, but he just didn't seem to be able to get it together today, then came the late arrivals of Andrew Halstead & Gary Sanderson who turned up slightly later than being fashionably late! They started with each others boats, in a vain attempt to confuse the rest of the fleet, then Gary suffered a jammed rudder on Andrews' Presto, so they swapped again Paul Risdale kindly loaning Andrew, Puma 305 so that he could compete in the final three races.

It was good to see you all and the fleet certainly was most interesting with eight different Footy types amongst the nine competitors.
There is a change of date for the July MFL event which will now take place on Saturday, July 13th.
