THE CADENHEAD TROPHY MYA OPEN FOOTY EVENT
held at Sumners Ponds on 6th October 2012

Report by Nick Burden

11 Skippers arrived at Sumners Ponds, Barnes Green, near Horsham for the Dabblers Cadenhead Trophy Event of 2012. Last year the event was held at our ‘home’ waters at the lake in Southwater Country Park which turned out to be very disappointing due to lack of wind and an abundance of weed. It was decided therefore to hold this year’s event at Sumners Ponds which is weed free and is our venue on alternate Thursdays. We managed to rent some ‘fishing time’ on a Saturday (the lake is normally used for fishing).

The weather was kind, being sunny with hardly any wind at first but later a light breeze developed which enabled some more exciting racing to take place. The course involved rounding two buoys, then coming back past an island and rounding a more distant buoy and then back across the finishing line. One bright spark thought that he could do better by rounding the island on the opposite side – needless to say this was not a success!

We were very pleased to see skippers from as far afield as Kettering and Clevedon. As it turned out their long journeys were rewarded with much greater success than the Dabblers home team! I think they must have read the weather reports because they turned up with larger sails than the Dabblers and this paid dividends in the very light wind conditions. It soon became clear that David Wilkinson with his beautifully turned out una rigged ‘Iambus2’ was going to be the one to beat. Peter Jackson was offering stiff competition with his swing rigged ‘ICE’, however he could not quite catch the speeding Iambus2.

Scott Wallis did well coming third with his very narrow una-rigged boat. It looked more like an aircraft fuselage type of construction, obviously very light. Nick Burden had some trouble initially in controlling his new design ‘Footman’, this turned out to be an aerial lead being too close to the battery lead causing servo interference (some lessons to be learned). Moving the aerial away cured most of the problems and it showed promise in performance and was the leader in the ‘home’ side. Adam Cowley did well coming fourth with his ghostly 1299 showing most of its innards through a transparent hull.

David Wilkinson took home the Cadenhead Footy Trophy and promised to bring it back next year to give us another chance at winning it! The event was run in a friendly and sporting spirit and was thoroughly enjoyed by all competitors. Thanks go to Les Baker, who was race officer of the day and helped make the day a success. Thanks also Alan Woodroffe for manning the rescue boat and to Steve Hill for score recording and Rick Moffatt for marshalling, also to Charles Smith for computer input.

We look forward to another friendly and competitive event next year.
