Bassett Lowke Open
&
August Round of the Midland Footy League

It can not be stressed enough the importance of today's competition to some of the competitors, the second running of the Bassett Lowke Open at Abington Park Model Yacht Club. Firstly not only was it a Footy Open it was also round six of the Open Footy League with the three main protagonists David Wilkinson, Peter Shepherd & Peter Jackson, all left in the hunt in attendance, added to that the August round of the Midland Footy League where although the first two places are all tied up third was still very much up for grabs and being hotly contested by Graham Tite and Paul Risdale. Throw into the mix the attendance of the 2013 Footy Gold Cup winner Phil Tyler and you can see that everything was to play for.

The course was set by OOD Peter Jackson as a very long triangle and sausage, utilising the full length of the boating lake, this meant that the windward buoy was tucked well up at the top of the course meaning rounding the mark was somewhat tricky as the winds always tend to be on the fluky side in this part of the lake. The triangle was simple enough with the wing mark set about halfway down the lake, however once again the leeward mark would give some of the skippers difficulty not so much on the approach, but when leaving it and making progress up the lake the right decisions had to be made to ensure you didn't lose to much ground.

All the boats were measured in the box and the sails checked against the Experimental Sail template and found to be in order.

The early winds were very light and this suited the narrow hull of Phil Tylers SliM (SUI42) consequently he got off to a excellent start with the only glitch being when he and Peter Jacksons Ice (30) tangled at the start of race 3, gradually the wind freshened and Peter Shepherd Ice (65) was able to come back at Phil with a couple of performances before lunch that were enough to give him hope for the afternoon session. Further down the fleet there was no real order being established with first one skipper doing well and then another coming to the fore. At the back Sid Sims and Nigel Rudd were locked in a titanic battle to see who could not come last, Nigel had a servo failure on his Ice 02, switched to a Supabug which took on water, and finally ended up sailing Phil Tylers spare prototype SliM, declaring it the best of the bunch he sailed that day.

The afternoon had a very different feel with the slightly stronger winds allowing the Ice skippers to come back at Phil, Peter Shepherd took four wins early on to ad to his two from the morning to give himself the hope that he might overhaul Phil, however it was not to be as the light fluky winds returned for the final three races, if only Peter had been able to avail himself of the revitalising properties of Mrs Tites cake it might have been a different story. As it was Phil Tyler SliM (SUI42) won with 20 points. Peter Shepherd Ice (65) was second with 25 points and Peter Jackson Ice (30) third with 40 points, 4th was Paul Risdale Wice (53) extending his lead over Graham Tite 1299 (40) in the Midland Footy league, who was just beaten for fifth place by David Wilkinson Iambus2 (46). Mike Ewart Puma305 (153) was a very creditable 7th in his first Footy event using  a boat borrowed from Paul. 8th was Trevor Thomas Awk (58) although he showed some of his old form at times maybe he will get back to it now he has more time to sail.

The second place in this event meant that Peter Shepherd and David Wilkinson are now tied for the lead in the Open Footy League, with Peter Jackson just 3 points  behind, with two races to go the result could go to anyone of the three.

Thanks go to you all for a most enjoyable days racing.
