Midland Footy League - September 2013
report by Peter Shepherd

We tried three different courses during the day, the promised stronger winds came but not until after lunch, consequently the right rigs to be on were the light winds despite the occasional stronger gusts. Most skippers opted for a rig one down from their maximum although Sid Sims sailed the entire event on his Just'in rig. Setting the course was a little tricky as the wind was shifting to almost every direction indeed the long first leg could have almost every sail set you could think of to get to the first buoy, sometimes in one race! More than one skipper got caught out when in the lead  following the wind only to find it had joined the rest of the fleet somewhere else on the pond.

With all the major places tied up already the September round of the Midland Footy league turned into something of an experimental race with a number of skippers trying out new idea's hopefully to challenge for the "Dead Tree Trophy" next year. Mike Ewart sailing a loaned Puma 305 made a great start and apart from a couple of slip ups in the morning looked set to take the victory in only his second footy event, however as the wind picked up and stabilised  in the afternoon session his results seemed to drop away and the more consistent finishes of Peter Jackson (Red Box) started to tell. Eventually there was only one point between them and after discards three points. So Peter Jackson took the win and with Mike Ewart well advanced in the making of a depron Easy 3 it should make for an interesting battle next time. Peter Shepherd was somewhat hampered by the lack of water tightness of the "20 minute Supabug" maybe we should take a  few minutes longer next time! this forced him to switch to his ICE by race eight add to this a broken Just'in rig mast just before racing commenced meant he came away quite pleased with his third place.
Despite changing the course twice we just didn't seem to find something to satisfy Paul Risdale, perhaps it was because Mike was making such a good job of sailing the Puma 305 loaned to him by Paul! However if he looks back at the results table he actually acquitted himself well with a couple of victories and a number of consistent results, perhaps his dissatisfaction is born out of the tremendous run of victories he has within the RG65 class.
Sid Sims stuck with his "Just'in" rig throughout the day when perhaps it would have been prudent to try a slightly smaller rig once the wind had freshened. David Wilkinson once again made the long trip from his Cotswold base, he tried numerous rig combinations on his Iambus 2 and was rewarded with a victory just two races from the end. It is taking him sometime to get used to the fickle winds of our town centre lake. Nigel Rudd went home happy with a win in the very last race when he just pipped Peter Shepherd over the line.

Thanks to all who took part for once again providing an interesting day's racing, Peter Jackson for his assistance with the course clearing and scorecard duties and all the other bits he did throughout the day. Hopefully we will see you all again for the last event of the year in this league on October 12th.
