 Mad March Hare Trophy
Cotswold MYC Open

17/03/2012 report compiled by David Wilkinson

There was a good turnout of eight skippers for this event which combined the Mad March Hare Trophy, originally from Colwyn Bay MYC, with the Cotswold Open. Although rain was forecast by the Met Office it stayed dry throughout and reasonably warm, with a SW wind of about 7 mph which fluctuated up and down enough so rig changes were needed. There was no weed, due to some combination of the blue dye in the water and the time of year, making ideal conditions for Footy racing. Race Officer Ivan Kirk of Cotswold MYC set an Olympic course with a leeward gate for starting and a windward mark left to port. There were two laps, going through the gate either way out after the first lap and finishing on a run.

With near perfect conditions the results were directly related to boat speed and sailing skill and the tone was set in the first race, won by Hugh McAdoo with his Stollery Ice design boat. He then went on to win the next four races and ended up winning twelve out of the sixteen for a convincing win of the event. This level of dominance continued his run of success in 2011 and presents something of a problem for other Footy skippers in that the Ice design is not available either as a plan or to buy. It would be very difficult to make from a plan anyway as it is entirely constructed from carbon fibre mouldings.

Other Stollery designs that are available as plans were the SupaBug, sailed by Peter Jackson and David Wilkinson and the AWK sailed by Trevor Thomas. None of these were quite to plan as only the Wilkinson one used a Correx hull and none of them had the supermarket bag system of sails. All used swing rigs but of nominally more sophisticated materials, that in reality may not have been so. The Thomas AWK did win race 6 but otherwise struggled, with a single third place being its next best. The Wilkinson SupaBug was slightly better getting 3 second places and 5 thirds although it never looked like winning a race. It did get round the windward mark first once but was overtaken on the run by the Ice and Scott Wallis’ Ranger. It managed third overall but clearly lacked boat speed on the run where sail setting is not involved. On the beat it had considerable sail problems due to the non-standard system used.

The Wallis Ranger was an interesting variation on the hard chine Hagerup design on the Footy website. Instead of wood the hull was made of a thin plastic sheet called Depron which is lighter than balsa and waterproof. Wallis was able not only to get the design displacement of 300gm but to do it with a 210gm lead giving a very high ballast ratio. This boat went very well getting three wins and a lot of seconds for overall second place. Peter Shepherd had another Hagerup design. This was a Razor3 but with his own modifications. Normally this boat sits in the measuring box diagonally to get some extra waterline length over the 305mm. The modification was to also incline the boat in the box so it was down at the stern to get even more length, rather as the later Ranger design does. However, the skipper is relatively new to Footy sailing and, probably, to model yachts so he may not have realized the boat’s full potential. John Birnie volunteered that he thought his boat was too heavy at 22oz or 590gm and is thinking about a lighter one. Gary Sanderson was sailing one of his own-design very light boats after a period away from Footy. He managed a second in race 9 but otherwise needed more speed.

Overall the first few places were Hugh McAdoo (14 pts), Scott Wallis (24), David Wilkinson (46) and Trevor Thomas (58), who all won prizes, the first three getting Cotswold Open plaques as well, and Hugh McAdoo winning the Mad March Hare Trophy.  Thanks go to Ivan Kirk and David Baker of Cotswold MYC for running the event.
