Last heat result see Roger Unit win!
Nine skippers blew off some cobwebs for a first Midlands area club event of the season, a couple of foriegners turned up to try to test a new Bermuda Rig on Peter Jacksons "Fatter" Boy before Fred's Big Toephy, the rig was fine unfortunately gremlins got in the electronics.
The racing was great, fun and friendly with the club skippers getting much closer to the seasoned open circuit ones, although sadly the scorecard doesn't show it. Roger Unitt's Slim going particularly well. Thanks guy's it was a fun afternoon, I hope to see you all again soon. Report by Keith Parrott Six Frensham Footy fanatics turned out to sail the first one class event of the year. A simple windward leeward course was set into the strong westerly wind for the fleet consisting of 4 x Ice, 1 plywood Super Bug and one Fat Boy Slim designs. The ability of the ICE boats to carry more sail than the other designs was immediately apparent in the first race when Graham Whitehead took a commanding lead followed by Peter Mitchell sailing Keith Parrott’s ICE. Unfortunately Charles Smith had a radio failure in this first race which meant he had to retire from the event. Race 2 saw Frank Wood achieve his best result with a second place with his Fat Boy. Steve Hill had selected the smallest rig to start the event and despite dealing well with the gusts was being out sailed by those with the bigger rigs. Andy Andrews sailing a Footy for the first time was finding these very responsive boats a bit of a handful compared to the 8 meter he usually sails.
In race 3, a pattern was starting to emerge with Graham leading followed by Peter, who was coming to terms with Footy sailing, then Frank or Steve followed by Andy. In Race 5 Graham did not have it all his own way as he was beaten into second place by Peter who had been getting ever closer to Graham in each race. However Graham restored the situation by winning the last race. It was hoped to sail at least 8 races but delays due to boat recoveries and radio faults limited the event to just 6 races. But the cobwebs were blown off the boats for the start of the year, everybody enjoyed themselves and said they are looking forward to the next event. The final score and results after 1 discard are 1st Place Graham Whitehead 5 points 2nd Place Peter Mitchell 9points 3rd Place Frank Wood 16 points 4th Place Steve Hill 17 points 5th Place Any Andrews 24 points 6th Place Charles Smith retired |
