Midland Footy League - April 2013 Results
report by Peter Jackson

The Midland Footy League had six entrants today, which had high winds from differing directions. It was first thought that the Stollery ‘A’ rig would be acceptable but it quickly became evident that this was just a sail too far, and those of us sailing Ice’s and Box’s went down to ‘B’ rigs or ‘C’ rigs. The bravest of us stuck with ‘B’ rigs.

The course was an upwind mark from the start followed by a wing mark then a downwind to a leeward mark, followed by an upwind leg to the windward mark then a downwind dash to the finish.

We managed sixteen races with three throwaway scores. Nigel Rudd is coming to grips with his Ice winning the thirteenth race and second in race fifteen.

Graham Tite from BMYC suffered a rudder servo failure in race two but we were able to supply a spare from one of our 1299 boats, so after some modification of the rudder linkage he was able to continue. Indeed at times it seemed all the entrants suffered some failure or other with the noteable exception of Sid who sailed throught the day untroubled.

Sid Simms was resolute yet again and I really feel for this chap, he is getting better but his kit needs improving and we tried to help him with his set up, and indeed he came third in the third race.

So this was the first time this year the weather was warmer, the wind was good and it only started to rain as we were packing up.

The racing was conducted in a friendly but correct manner and I think all who attended went home pleased with at least one race.

We also had a visit from Tim Lees who has made two balsa Footys a Papaya & a Puma 305, he wasn't unable to spend the whole race day with us but spent sometime sailing his boats, both of which appeared to sail well. Hopefully he will be able to attend a race meeting soon, the Puma 305 certainly looked a worthy contender.

One notable event was a retriever  dog tried to recover some of the buoys from the course, perhaps the owner will keep it on a lead next time.
